This week DeepSeek flipped from price predator to commercial entity: it warned of an API price hike with no numbers, then quietly restarted an $8 billion round at a higher valuation. The two stories are one story — a lab that needs to monetize. What does it mean for the price war, and for developers who built on $0.14/M tokens? Sources linked, our take in italics.

DeepSeek's $0.14 era may be ending

DeepSeek told API users August 6 it plans a 'significant' price increase across its services; size and effective date undisclosed. Current V4-Flash rates: $0.14/M input (cache hit $0.0028), $0.28/M output; V4-Pro $0.435/$0.87. The notice follows May's permanent V4-Pro discount and July's announced 2x weekday peak-hour pricing (9-12, 14-18 Beijing time), still undated. Artificial Analysis measured V4-Flash at ~3 cents per Intelligence Index test, vs $1.86 for GPT-5.6 Sol and $3.15 for Claude Fable 5.

Why it matters: Nobody expected the price floor to move first. May's 75% cut built the war; this notice quietly retires it. $0.14 won't hold — budgets built on it are unanchored. Cache hits, off-peak runs, domestic rivals, self-hosted weights, fallback: that's the lever until rates land.

DeepSeek restarts $8B round after leak-pause

DeepSeek quietly reopened its second funding round this week, seeking close to $8 billion at a pre-money valuation near 500 billion yuan (~$74 billion), per Bloomberg. Monolith Management is in talks to join a syndicate that includes China's national AI fund, NetEase, JD.com and IDG Capital. The round paused in late July after leaked remarks by founder Liang Wenfeng on Nvidia dependence and the US-China AI gap went viral; agreements are expected to be signed in late August.

Why it matters: DeepSeek's round stalled over a leak and came back three weeks later at a higher price. That's state-linked capital treating it as a strategic asset, not a venture bet. Cheap APIs made DeepSeek famous; this round says low prices must become a sustainable business.
